Steps to Choose Right Compression Stockings

What compression socks do I need? Are compression socks good for swollen feet? How should I choose compression stockings? The variety of compression socks and stockings can be confusing. We’ve prepared these 3 simple steps to help you with the choice.

1st Step: Choose the Compression

Compression stockings are specially made, snug-fitting, stretchy stockings that gently squeeze the leg. Graduated compression stockings are tighter around the ankle and exert less compression as they move up the leg.

15-20 mmHg Moderate compression for daily wear and sports recovery

These easy to wear compression stockings help with mild swelling (edema) and fatigued legs due to long periods of travel, sitting, standing and after workout.

20-30 mmHg Firm compression for managing swelling in your legs, spider veins, varicose veins, travel, sports and after certain surgeries

The 20-30 mmHg level of compression is class 1 medical grade compression. It provides competent compression to your legs without being too strong. You don’t have to have a medical condition to wear 20-30 mmHg. It also benefits pregnant mothers to alleviate heaviness, swelling and aching in their legs.

30-40 mmHg Extra firm compression for managing moderate to severe symptoms, medical recovery

This level of medical compression is a stronger medical grade class II. It’s recommended for people that have a blood clot, a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), lymphedema, severe swelling (edema), severe varicose veins and post-surgery.

40-50 mmHg for severe venous insufficiency, wound management, and lymphedema

The 40-50 mmHg level is a very strong medical grade class III. People considering this level of compression have thoroughly consulted their doctors.

2nd Step: Choose what type of stockings

Knee High –

Although full length compression stockings are the best option to deal with venous insufficiency and varicose veins, knee high compression stockings are often preferred, because they are easier to put on and off and more comfortable to wear. For these reasons, patient compliance with compression therapy is higher if knee high length is prescribed.

Thigh High –

Thigh high compression stockings are made to cover your entire leg thus improving circulation throughout the entire leg. If you are recovering from a surgery, have limited mobility or any issues above the knee, consider thigh high compression stocking.

Pantyhose/ Maternity Pantyhose –

Compression pantyhose is a great choice for those who require full length compression stockings but doesn’t want to deal with irritations or wearing discomfort that anti-slip silicone band of thigh high stockings can cause. In addition to compression benefits, pantyhose can prevent chafing and keep you warm during cold weather.

3rd Step: What style to choose?

Opaque style

is ideal for after surgery, varicose veins and swelling for both men and women. They are not only durable, comfortable and easy to wear, but also mask spider veins, scars and other leg imperfections. Available in all levels of compression.

Semi sheer style

combines benefits of both opaque and sheer styles. Durable, light weight, and breathable properties meet customers’ daily need for graduated compression, comfort, and elegance.

Sheer style for women

is lightweight, transparent, and fashionable. It is perfect for a hot weather. Although sheer fabric is less durable, stylish appearance it offers is always in demand.
